Lions Clubs are an International association.

There are over 1.4 million Lions worldwide, in 103 countries. This size (the world’s largest volunteer organisation) means Lions make a significant difference where it really matters - wherever there is need, and particularly in the areas of health, environment and community relations.

For example, the Lions SightFirst initiative is an ongoing £multi-million campaign to help treat and prevent blindness worldwide – 24 million people have already been helped in eye hospitals and clinics (often mobile, to get to outlying areas). Part of this activity includes the collection of 1000’s of old spectacles in Bexhill for refurbishment by Lions and reuse in developing countries.

Other examples of International cooperation include support for WaterAid (safe water supplies), DentAid (dental care), Tacade (life skills programmes for schools), MedicAlert (bracelets with emergency medical details), Street Children aid agencies, and more.

Over the past few years Lions living in areas affected by natural disasters have been able to identify the best ways of providing immediate and long term disaster relief, with support from groups of clubs (such as the provision of fishing boats for those devastated by the Sri Lankan tsunami, funded by Lions in the SE of England), or from Lions International disaster funds (for example the tsunami, Pakistan Earthquake, New Orleans floods). European Lions alone donated £88 million for humanitarian causes last year.

These and many other International activities operate wherever needed – and that includes Sussex and the rest of Britain too!
